My car ('98 2.8 Widebody) is in for some beautifying and needs two new side skirts / outer sills which I've been told are in the region of £150 each new (cheaper at Sopers but I'm led to believe they don't post body panels).
The unit next door to the body shop I use is home to a top class fibreglass fabricator and he reckons he can make some up for around £180 a pair plus delivery.
He would need 10 pre-orders to cover the cost of making the moulds - are there any other Widebody owners who would be interested in this project?

I believe there is a company in Europe already manufacturing these.

I've Googled for Z3 sills but all I find is people struggling to find replacements or links to threads taking about rusty sills! Any more info would be welcome.

What are the advantages of fibreglass? I know it's not structural here so it's okay to use and I know they wouldn't rot.

But rot can still take place around the sills elsewhere so it shouldn't stop you periodically popping off the sills to check for debris.

And I think it would just give me the heebie-jeebies knowing they weren't original/steel. Yes I know whole kit cars based on Z3s are fibreglass but I wouldn't want one of them either!

I did send a PM to a member I think in Holland, but he said the export cost would be too high.
I got a quote last week from BMW for replacements at £273.70 for both.

i am in the process of doing my outer sills at the min.found a place called shapecraft in hinkley leicester that did a fantastic job cutting out rusty metal and replacing with new.cost just 80 quid for mine.just getting ready for paint now and then job done.bit of a job but hopefully will be as good as new when back on.repair or buy new.....repair for me.

probably @Stormy_be in Belgium and yes he found the shipping costs very high but a good product if you need them. JIM

I'm awaiting a reply from Stormy_be re his fibreglass sills but on another thread he says he is concentrating on the Belgian/Euro market due to delivery costs to the UK.
The metal used one in the link above are £165 delivered but they've then got to be treated and prone to rusting again.
So, would there be any interest in UK supplied fibreglass sills at around £180 a pair (plus delivery)?

Was that £80 the pair? How much did the paint job cost? My body shop has quoted £120 a side to remove the old, prepare and paint new and fit and I think that's a bit expensive - £250 a side if I buy new sills from Sopers!

hi.i paid 80 quid for repair on both sills.i took them off myself and had them painted at my work.was owed a favour so only had to pay for the paint.all being well they will be going back on tomorrow time and weather permitting.not a hard job to remove the sills yourself.

£120 a side is actually pretty cheap if they are done properly, its vital that they treat the inner sill and the inside of the new sills

The oem sills aren't the cheapest,I paid £114 plus vat per side. But at least you can be sure they'll fit properly and if prepped, protected and painted properly as top bodywork/painter Sean has done with mine should outlast the car at the age they are, mine's 18 now and i presume the old sills were the original ones.

Steve
Your sills where the original ones mate and to be honest, they was not that bad at all

Crikey that's good to know. So now they're done that's it for many years :).
Bet mine will last longer then yours, :D your just to hardcore pal, all that wet stuff that you subject your car too, we can discuss it when we get our bus passes ;)
