Anyone know of a place or site to get a 2001 Z3 3.0 rack and pinion, apparently mine is broken and didn’t pass inspection and the ones I found is going to take at least 1-2 months to arrive. Been having a hard time finding one.

In the UK I use eBay they do an exchange service for £170.

Might be able to do that through the International Shipping Program?

Tony.

Honestly I feel like I’ve been bamboozled by the mechanic. I brought it in for a simple state inspection and it came out this way. There’s no leaks or anything. He just said I had to replace it. Honestly from the looks of it, it’s dry, the bellows look nice. The only thing at the moment is that my left tire clunks when driven. It all just magically happened at the mechanic, a bmw specialist too…

2nd opinion may be required
On the whole from what I've seen and read z3 racks are pretty resilient and don't give up that often.
Did your man say what the specific issue was with the rack

He said well you have a lot of problems with the car and the usual stuff about wow I can’t believe they sold you a car like that. Proceeded to tell me that the CCV is bad and the thermostat is also bad and then he failed me for inspection. They used to take care of me but idk what’s going on. Perhaps they just saw a 2001 z3 with 44,000 miles and said meh, let’s charge him everything

I think as long as no prohibitive costs involved I would get a second opinion if someone else tells you the same thing then fair enough but if your personal opinion is that something not quite right then a second opinion will help to gauge your next move.

Yeah I was examining the car itself, I feel like I could have made a better decision. I’ll go to another mechanic prior to forking out money to fix possibly a nonexistent issue. Thanks to all of you!

Good luck hope it works out for you.
Don't know what condition US zeds are usually in but here in UK most zeds needs some sort of restoration now as they are now 20 - 25 yr old cars.

Glad you came to the conclusion. Hope you get some clarity.
