What determined tire size from factory?

Evening, everyone... I searched the forums and the internet for this and came up with nothing, which means the first poster will send me a link to the info that was right under my nose...

Looking at tire sellers and the forums and the owners manual, it seems that Z3s could come with staggered or square sets of tires (and there are a few sizes for the square sets, as well). What determined whether a particular car got square or staggered tires?

I would guess wheel choice at ordering a new car and engine size, the cheaper or stock wheels were most likely smaller rims and a square set up for the small engine variants, and wider bigger staggered rims for the larger horsepower variants.
