Ok another newbie question a couple of times when the rear wheels have spun a bit I get a couple of lights on the dash. They stay on for 15 - 20 mins then go out is this normal?

Yes. It's telling you that the TC is working. I've noticed it more since I put winter tyres on

I can't say that staying on for that length of time is normal unless you're ragging it for that time? When mine breaks traction ASC light comes on momentarily then goes out once normal service has resumed, a couple of seconds.

I agree, mine give a quick flash if you spin the wheels and often on speedbumps but it is only a flash.

Yes I feel that I have not been driving properly unless I get the light to flash a few times on a journey, it lets me know I'm driving round bends at the correct speed, but they do stop flashing when normal grip is found.
