good news glad they turned out to be not too bad after all... the first few pics made them look very crusty... you should have plenty more years life left in the car... i suspect theres a lot worse cars and vans about...

Its too wet here for me to get on with my refitting of sills i have a constant puddle of water where my car is jacked up... no rush though...
 
Have been over again today and can confirm they are solid despite the surface crud.

Thank god BMW made them out of thick steel!
 
DAY 2

Bit of a slow one today with a mixed bag of weather. Managed to clean up the OS sill, 2 coats of Vactan, plus a second on the NS, and Dynax S-50 on the insides of both. Just have to coat in primer now when I get some newspapers, hopefully sooner than later. Pics below

DAY 3

Clouds cleared after work so papered up the car and primed the sills. Not going to win any awards, but hopefully will do the job. I was very liberal, as your mother always said, don't cheat on the cheese!

That's it for now until I get a price for spraying. Hopefully won't be long until I can take her for a spin again!

Induction replaces today. New rubber hoses as the old ones had perished, plus a cone filter, and new duct.

I used 1m of 50mm hose, cut in half and squished it into an oval to feed it behind the headlight, kept one hose there, just as the OEM duct had been, and fed the other down to the top of the lower grille. Hopefully this will give more cold air.

Job for another day is to box it in with aluminium sheet as others have done.

Also, as there was no lamp in the boot light, replaced for four 100mm led strios, only about £12 of eBay

Days like today, whilst great for working on the car, should be for driving around the countryside with the top down. Shame she's not drivable for another few weeks.

Not much done today, although I spent most of the day tinkering.

Having removed the cd changer, I replaced the back liner with some lining carpet off eBay, not as dark as I was expecting, but looks ok. Contact adhesive spray did the trick nicely, and put cardboard around the cables each side for extra protection

Over a few half days and evenings this week I have almost finished the induction, inspiration and artistic license stolen from @g8jka. Just have to put a strap on the front to stop it moving, and secure the air feed hoses. Impressed with my handiwork!

Dropped the new sills, and wing panels from @spurs fan in a coupe, at the spray shop this morning, so she could be back on the road by the end of the weekend :party:
 
Sills and front wings have returned and are fitted :D Almost drivable now, just have to get the arches in and jack pads on, nearly there!

Paintwork by Gatehouse Motorcraft, Aylesbury. He put the stone chips protection on the inside of the sills too, nice touch.

I have been doing a few bits on the zed, but have failed to keep up with posting. So I have probably forgotten some stuff!

Most notably with help from the wealth of knowledge and experience that is the zed shed I have replaced the 20 year old suspension for standard shocks and eibach 30mm lower springs, also spaced the rear wheels out 15mm

Can't think of anything else, even though I'm always spending money on her, but new rear pads and disks, front flexis, and fluid change should be happening this weekend and then it will be time for the big trip to Le Mans!

Ok...I've got to ask...what's the benefit of the rear wheels being repositioned 15mm?

I went down the route of mechanicals first and then the bodywork.

Once lowered, the rear wheels sit quite far in, so it pushes them out to nearly flush with the body work. Purely aesthetics, but looks crap without
 
I recently found and unblocked the hood drain tubes in the B posts. I was and remain completely gob smacked to find they drain into the sills and rely on the flutes underneath to allow the water to find its way out. I will be doing my outer sill replacement this winter but I am also going to look at seeing if I can find a way to continue those tubes so that the water actually drains away harmlessly. What the hell were BMW thinking of when they designed that flaw in? Am I the only one to think this is just mad?
