Radio Power weird - short?

Hello!

Years ago I replaced the stock radio with a pioneer radio, and it recently died. So I bought a new fancy CarPlay enabled radio and figured it would be a quick swap. I was wrong.

It appears that maybe the radio didn't die, and maybe it's some power issue somewhere. After installing the new radio it didn't power up so I checked the voltage on the constant and ignition lines. The constant is showing about 4.5v, and the ignition is about 4.1 when powered on, and -8v when powered off.

I assume there's a short somewhere. Anyone know of any common places a short might occur or does anyone think it might be some other issue?

Sounds like you have some bad connections and or switches, you should probably trace the wiring harness back to a point where you have battery voltage like readings.

Find the electrical trouble shooting drawings for your build date. They are in the "Resources" section of this forum.

Work back along the power supply wires until you hit battery voltage.

I have a similar problem ; 3 years ago Halfords fitted a pioneer AVH-Z7100DAB in my 1999 Z3 2.8.It worked fine to start with but then started turning off and closing unexpectedly . This has got progressively worse and now the radio hardly turns on and off at all. I've just checked the yellow and red power inputs and they are giving me 3.9 -5 volts . Now have to trace back along the power lines as I assume there's some sort of random short somewhere . Any suggestions about likely culprits would be welcome.
