Just been to view a 2002 plate 2.2 Sport - with a view to it being a second zed/project car.

The car has 174k on the clock, first owner did over 160k, never missing a service. I was surprised how fit and tight the car was, the engine was sweet as a nut.

The car had quite a bit of tin worm in the usual places, sills, arches, rears etc and that is putting me off more than the mileage.

Just wondering if anyone’s Zed is running with as many miles and if so, what are the main mechanical headaches you have experienced?

@Mint has a 2.2 with similar mileage to the one you viewed.
As far as I know Dave has had no real dramas apart from the water pump failing which didn't cause any further problems, oh and a broken spring.
I can tell you it also go's like stink and handles excellent in the twisties as it's a sport model.

Steve.

Agreed Steve, water pump and a broken front spring, just coming up to 182,000 now:whistle:

1998 1.9l with 197,000 miles. Clutch at 165,000 miles has been the only major issue. Replaced shocks and struts at 180,000 miles although should have been replaced much sooner. Still a daily driver 80 + miles per day. As soon as daughter graduates from college at the end of the year will be looking to buy my 2nd Z3.

ensure dif fluid is changed, auto trans fluid also, shocks may need replacing, engine gaskets will be brittle if not changed recently so look out for small leaks from the rocker cover and oil filter housing [easy to replace], cooling system hoses check for brittleness, tie rod ends [check for movement], engine mounts look for cracks, check guibo flex disc, power steering fluid change, any abnormal tire wear can be from trailing arm bushings or rear sub frame bushings, check trans mounts, look for any weld that are popping in the boot or separation with the diff mount, diff mount bushing, as stuff mentioned in other posts.

Don't mean to scare you but I have done 115k miles in my 3.0 and all that stuff has been looked into since I have owner her, easy to do, well most of it. Just replace and inspect as required.

Assuming it all checks out then you have some good bargaining chips to pay a very modest sum of money for it. Which I would suggest is probably sub £2k.

Also bear in mind you could comfortably spend £2k on the car and it’s never likely to be worth much more than about £3k because of the miles.

The magic mileage seems to be under 100k historically for a better price. But I’m seeing more and more cars now that have tipped that.

I guess if it's project you'll be doing most of the usual stuff anyway, nice gearbox, engine and not too much rust and you should be ok.
I'll pop round to have a nosey if you get it!

Congrats. It'll been fine. Give it a good service for peace if mind and crack on and enjoy it.
