I know it sounds stupid but I was almost doin bricks when I did my first spraying last year. It was on my engine bay.

It came out very acceptably using spray cans from the local supplier. And it wasn’t difficult and it was all in the prep nAlthough that was a flat colour and metallic is more involved.

I used the halfords etch primer. Unfortunately this was one of my first jobs when I got the car, mirrors would not fold so I took them off and fully refurshed them but did not take any pickles which I know helps others on the forum. I put plenty of coats of both primer and top coat.
Not forgetting etch primer is for metal not plastic. And it needs a mask as it’s nasty stuff.

Plastic primer for plastic. And high build primer after that if the plastic has a finish that needs loosing.

I only used the etch primer on the bases. The plastic mirror covers were fine. Thanks for the note anyway.

I have been inspired by this thread to tackle my drivers side mirror. The plinth was bubbling when I purchased the Z3 last May. Cleaned off the flaking paint at the time and touched in with paint as a temporary fix, result didn't look too obvious but it has started to bubble again (unsurprisingly). Oddly enough, the passenger side is unblemished.
Have just ordered a replacement from X8R (£85) so will strip down when it arrives. My mirror cover also has a few chips so paint will likely be required on the whole mirror to do a proper job. Will get a quote for this from my trusted body shop. Be interesting to see how much they will charge for this, no strip down required by them. Guessing they would allow for a couple of hours work and materials?:)
