Hi Everyone

Has anybody had experience with the Halford's BMW paint? My Zed is Boston Green and I don't want to spray the bases of the new X8R mirrors if it isn't going to match up. We have a family friend who does great paint work but he's away and I'm reluctant to wait as my wing mirror is hanging off haha

Cost isn't a problem, just wanted something I could get my hands on sooner, if anybody knows of any alternatives that are perfect matches I'd be happy to try. I have got the Chippex Paint but it's not a spray.

I would've left them black but the finish isn't as nice as I was hoping it to be

Any help or guidance or just an opinion would be appreciated

Cheers

Danielle

Hi Danielle, I've used Halfords aerosol paint on both my Z3 and Z4 and have been very pleased with the results. Prep. is key though.

Tony.

Hi @t-tony thank you! I was a bit dubious as it is fairly inexpensive! The surface is smooth but i'm going to do a couple of coats of primer first :)

I don’t think Halford’s paint is as bad as some people make out.

But if you really want to do it properly find out the automotive paint supplier that the local small bodyshops use.

You can get a large can of custom matched paint for about £12. And the quality won’t be in question.

It’s only for a really small area so will try out the Halfords first and then if that doesn’t cut it, I’ll ask the pro!

Quite excited to have a go if I’m honest

Thanks all for your replies - really appreciate it

Start with a couple of light coats and build your confidence, however the finish and durability will never match that of a professional, after all it is out of a tin and not activated,

Thanks for the tip @Sean d If it was a bigger area I wouldn’t even risk doing it myself. Worst case scenario, it’ll be one for the experience book and a job for the pros

Don't just use standard primer on the resin base as it will no adhere properly, it will need a light coat of plastic primer first.

Sprayed my mirror bases with halfords paint, must say came up treat. Matched the mirrors really well. As you say anything larger I would have sorted by a specialist paint shop. All in the prep.
I would say give it a go nothing to lose

Nifty

@DanielleHN the lovely @Tim beard did my Paint work on my Black Panther and I love it
Unfortunately before Tim got hold of it I went local and that was a BIG mistake but it's all good now
Maybe You could get a price from him to send them over?

Hi, where is he based? I’m desperate to get them on the car as it’s currently not being used due to the mirrors :( might have a go and if all goes wrong then I’m a wally and I’ll ask the professionals

Kent
He is hours from me but worth it and I sooo wish I went to him first so ended up paying twice but second time round I am soooo happy
He will be having Sunny for a full respray in the future

I used the halfords etch primer. Unfortunately this was one of my first jobs when I got the car, mirrors would not fold so I took them off and fully refurshed them but did not take any pickles which I know helps others on the forum. I put plenty of coats of both primer and top coat.

Awesome, thank you! I’ll be sure to put a few coats on

"hard top, post: 366181, member: 115"]:offtopic: Hey @Nifty Fifty, where you been hiding? Not seen you on here for ages ....
:offtopic:H.T I know, just been busy doing other things over the year with both work and home.
I only used my Z once last year and have promised myself to use it more this summer.
So will need to keep an eye on events.
However took the cover off yesterday to give her turnover only to find my battery's flat (only 2 years old)
