A trip to the shed yesterday morning for a gearbox oil change. BMW say it is a lifetime oil but I don't think any oil can last that long. I had it changed at 100,000 mile by a local independent but decide it was time for another one at 188,000 prior to another Euro trip.
I had planned to do it myself but Lee kindly stepped in to save the discomfort in my shoulders which make working above head height difficult.
I was surprised how clean the oil was after this mileage, no nasty bits in to see and it was fascinating to see the inside of the later type of auto box.

Looks like new.

That’s reassuring.

I’m really keen to get mine done but the local garage want £600 to do it, plus the diff oil!
2002 and only done 61k miles but that’s nearly 25yr old oil and filter
🤷‍♂️

I’m going to have to invest in some ramps and blocks etc to try and get the car level on my sloping driveway and have a go.

£600 .. that sounds like the ‘we don’t want to do it’ price. It’s not that complex a job. Would highly recommend getting your gearbox mount bushes replaced at the same time.

I've not done this old style auto box before so wanted to have a peak inside, I've done a few Solenoid rebuilds on the newer ones now. Seems this unit is very basic with only 3 main solenoids.

Give me very basic any day , especially when it comes to repairing it!
